Long Answer:
HDTV, or High Definition Television, is a new television format that aims to bring the rich experience of movies theaters to home theaters. HDTV television sets have higher resolution than standard TV's, which gives more detail to the picture being viewed. They also have a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is longer than the standard television's 4:3 aspect ratio. In order to take advantage of the televisions features, however, the broadcaster must broadcast in a format that supports the higher resolution and increased viewing area. Currently, because of bandwidth limitations, only DVD's can fully exploit the HDTV's superior viewing capabilities. The only country currently broadcasting HDTV is Japan. The Japanese broadcast in a hybrid analog/digital format that is convenient for Japanese satellites to broadcast given Japan's topography, but unfit for broadcast over large land areas such as Europe or the United States.
